lollipops
Sponsored by BMW Manufacturing, Lollipops is a free program held at local libraries that introduces classical music, orchestral instruments, and the musicians of the GSO to our very youngest audience members: preschoolers and early elementary schoolchildren.
These free, 30-minute interactive concerts blend well-known classical music (think composers like Mozart and Beethoven) with storybooks about music, selected specifically for the little ones. A small ensemble comprised of rotating combinations of the GSO’s wind quintet, string quintet and solo percussion perform along with a narrator from South Carolina Children’s Theater. Our storyteller provides the audience cues for physical and verbal participation that ultimately enhance young listeners’ vocabulary and reading comprehension.
As our longest-running education program, Lollipops has fostered music appreciation through active listening and engagement in the local community for over 50 years. At the end of every concert, we celebrate with a lollipop for everyone!

once upon an orchestra
As a collaboration between South Carolina Children’s Theatre (SCCT) and the GSO, Once Upon an Orchestra is also a free performance that engages young listeners and their attending family members with a dramatic blend of orchestral music, narrative, acting and movement.
Classical music is paired with a storybook and brought to life through a dynamic character performance in costume by the talented SCCT Principal Teaching Artist, Traysie Amick. She performs alongside a small ensemble comprised of a rotating combination of the GSO’s wind quintet, string quintet, and solo percussion. Additionally, interactive cues for physical actions actively drive the audience through each unique program. At the end of Once Upon an Orchestra, children are invited “on stage” with Miss Traysie and GSO to take a turn sharing their story!
Once Upon an Orchestra is held on three selected Tuesdays each spring at the SCCT headquarters in downtown Greenville, located at 153 Augusta St.
