education mission
Programs that generate passion for orchestral music are at the core of the GSO’s service to Greenville and the surrounding areas. Annually, the GSO offers more than 150 different events that serve nearly 28,000 people in the Upstate.
Live music is meant to be a shared experience. The GSO offers education concerts and programs for audiences of all ages.
Beginning with our Lollipops and Once Upon an Orchestra series, these programs are designed to make listening to live classical music an accessible activity families can enjoy together!
The GSO brings live classical music into the classroom with our in school EdReach concerts, visiting classrooms all throughout Greenville County School District, the nation’s 44th largest and the largest in South Carolina. Then the GSO welcomes over 3,000 children to our Children’s Concert, a special version of a GSO Masterworks concert, developed just for kids.
We must look to the future as we progress our art, and the best way to ensure its sustainability is to develop future audiences. This is why the GSO partners extensively with Greenville School District band and string programs and with two youth orchestras, Carolina Youth Symphony (CYS) and Greenville County Youth Orchestra (GCYO). GSO musicians teach students at the beginning of their artistic journey through our selective Music Mentors program and will even perform Shoulder to Shoulder with GCYO and Side by Side with CYS.
The GSO’s Education and Community Engagement initiatives inspire and entertain people of all ages and backgrounds. Our philosophy is this: we are Greenville’s orchestra, and it belongs to everyone here. From young to old, if there’s anything keeping you from experiencing the GSO, we will remove those barriers to participation — whatever they may be.
