Dr. Braxton Ballew

Education Director

A member of GSO’s double bass section since 2003, Ballew was appointed Education Director in 2007. In this role, he oversees planning and implementation of all GSO-sponsored education initiatives for Greenville County youth.

Ballew relocated to the Greenville area after completing his doctoral studies at the University of Georgia. He also holds degrees from Valdosta State University and the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Ballew also studied double bass with James Barket, Albert Laszlo and Milton Masciardi and composition with Henry Gwiazda and Leonard V. Ball, Jr.

An advocate for new music, Ballew has premiered numerous works for double bass and has performed with members of eight blackbird, Michael Tourke and Gerhard Samuel. He previously held the position of principal bass with the Whitewater Song Opera Orchestra and Opera Theatre of Lucca, Italy. Ballew has given solo and chamber recitals throughout the Southeast U.S., Italy and Portugal.
