THE GREAT ESCAPE
Edvard Tchivzhel, conductor
Edwin McCain, narrator
Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 3:00 PM
The Peace Concert Hall
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 3, Op. 29, D major (“Polish”)
Copland: Lincoln Portrait
Gershwin: An American in Paris
We start our season with the celebration of Maestro Tchivzhel’s and his family’s dramatic defection from the former U.S.S.R. to the U.S.A. after his American tour with the U.S.S.R. State Symphony Orchestra, which began in Greenville, SC. The very first program the Maestro performed on this tour included Tchaikovsky’s romantic Third Symphony. Next, the passionate statement of freedom, Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” will feature the popular singer, songwriter, rock star and Greenville native, Edwin McCain as narrator. One of Maestro Tchivzhel’s favorites, the boisterous and jazzy “An American in Paris,” will bring this very special evening to a festive conclusion.
