Once Upon An Orchestra
Martina the Beautiful Cockroach
Tuesday, April 17, 2018
South Carolina Children’s Theatre
1200 Pendleton Street
Greenville, SC 29611
Featuring Mary Lee Taylor Kinosian, GSO Acting Concertmaster
Martina the beautiful cockroach doesn’t know coffee beans about love and marriage. That’s where her Cuban family comes in. While some of the Cucarachas offer her gifts to make her more attractive, only Abuela, her grandmother, gives her something really useful: un consejo increible, some shocking advice. At first, Martina is skeptical of her Abuela’s unorthodox suggestion, but when suitor after suitor fails the “Coffee Test,” she wonders if a little green cockroach can ever find true love. Soon, only the gardener Perez, a tiny brown mouse, is left. But what will happen when Martina offers him cafe cubano?
GSO Acting Concertmaster Mary Lee Taylor Kinosian will provide musical accompaniment to the story, playing Cuban music arranged into a solo piece by Cuban composer Tulio Peramo Cabrera, while SCCT Principal Teaching Artist Traysie Amick will bring Martina the Beautiful Cockroach to magical life.
About “Once Upon An Orchestra”
What do you get when you combine Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s music education program with South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s “Tell Me A Story” Theatre? You get, “Once Upon An Orchestra!”
This performance series connects the children in your life to stories, music, and movement. Not only will young people be exposed to inspiring classical music, they will experience the connection stories make to these musical masterpieces! Best of all, we take turns! First, we perform for you, and then young people are invited to engage in a dramatic interpretation of moments or ideas in both the music and the story. Come imagine with us!
Performances are FREE and start at 10:00 a.m. Programs are appropriate for children 2 to 5 years old (slightly younger than Lollipops).
