Adult Education Programs

PRE-CONCERT TALKS

A guest speaker discusses the upcoming program one hour before each Masterworks Series concert for interested audience members.  These talks are free of charge and are typically held in the Founder's Room above Larkins on the River restaurant, next to the concert hall.

POST-CONCERT TALK BACKS

Following select Sunday afternoon Masterworks concerts, Education Director Braxton Ballew leads a casual "talk back" for interested audience members to react and respond to the music, discuss the program, and ask questions about the orchestra.

ACTIVE LISTENING

Audience members seated in the Upper Balcony of the concert hall are offered the opportunity to use an MP3 player, loaded with interesting content about the orchestra and concert program, during select Masterworks performances.  Active Listening is designed specifically to enhance the orchestral concert experience for new and younger audience members.  Active Listening is made possible through a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities.

SYMPHONY 101

These casual, relaxed, and fun gatherings are perfect for anyone who feels in the dark when it comes to any and all things about classical music.  The first Symphony 101 of the 2011-2012 season will be held on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:45 p.m. at The Lazy Goat and will  last approximately 45 minutes.  These events are free of charge - bring friends!

SALONS

Each season, the GSO offers informative "salons" which feature guest speakers who discuss a composer and/or specific musical work in its given historical context.  Past salons have included The Life and Music of Felix Mendelssohn, Shostakovich in Soviet Times, and Mozart's Family Life.
