LOLLIPOPS

Sponsored by BMW Manufacturing, Lollipops is a free program held at local libraries that introduces classical music, orchestral instruments and the musicians of the GSO to our very youngest audience members: preschoolers and early elementary schoolchildren.

These free, 30-minute interactive musical performances blend real classical repertoire such as Mozart, Handel and Schubert with live readings of music-centric storybooks. A small ensemble comprised of a rotating combination of the GSO’s wind quintet, string quintet and a solo percussionist performs while providing the audience cues for physical and verbal actions that ultimately enhance young listeners’ vocabulary and reading comprehension.

As our longest-running education initiative, Lollipops has fostered musical appreciation through active listening and engagement in the local community for over 50 years; and to close every presentation on a special note, “The End” is punctuated with a lollipop for each audience member.

ONCE UPON AN ORCHESTRA

As a collaboration between South Carolina Children’s Theatre (SCCT) and the GSO, Once Upon an Orchestra is also a free performance that engages young listeners and their attending family members with a dramatic blend of orchestral music, narrative, acting and movement.

Classical music repertoire is paired with a storybook and brought to life through a dynamic character performance in costume by the talented SCCT Principal Teaching Artist, Traysie Amick. She performs alongside a small ensemble comprised of a rotating combination of the GSO’s wind quintet, string quintet and a solo percussionist. Additionally, interactive cues for physical actions actively drive the audience through each unique program.

Once Upon an Orchestra events are held on three Tuesdays each spring at the SCCT headquarters in downtown Greenville, located at 153 Augusta St.
