Xiaoqing Yu
Concertmaster
A graduate of Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in China, Mr. Xiaoqing Yu came to the US in 1986 and soon, as a recipient of Manhattan School of Music Scholarship, Mr. Yu furthered his graduate studies under the prominent violin professor Rafael Bronstein at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
A native of China, Mr. Yu is in his sixteenth season as concertmaster of the Greenville Symphony. Over the years, Mr. Yu has performed with various chamber music groups in Europe and Canada and worked closely with members of the Cleveland and the Emerson string quartets. He was featured on Philadelphia‚s classical music station „WFLN‰ which was broadcast live on prime time. Mr. Yu continues to perform with Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra during each summer of 40 plus operas in a 10 week long opera festival in New York.
Prior to joining the Greenville Symphony, Mr. Yu served as principal second violinist of the American Chamber Orchestra and performed in over 100 metropolitan European cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Florence, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Lyon, Madrid, Marseille, Munich, Paris, Rotterdam, Sienna, among others.
While at the Manhattan School, Mr. Yu served as Co-principal second violin of the National Orchestra and performed in numerous concert halls including Carnegie concert hall, recital hall, and the Lincoln Center. He was featured on New York City‚s famed classical station „WQXR‰ which was broadcast live nationwide. Mr. Yu had performed throughout China with various music groups, as well as the National symphony orchestra before coming to the US.
Mr. Yu has won second prize of the Young Artist Competition of Atlanta Pro-Mozart Society; First prize of USC Concerto-Aria Competition, and Honorary Award of the Young Artist Competition, subsequently, as a soloist, Mr. Yu performed Mozart‚s Violin Concerto No. 4 and 5. Other solo engagements have included the performances of works by Bruch, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Wieniawski, Vieutemps, Vivaldi with various symphony orchestras. Mr. Yu performed regularly with Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and other chamber music groups and became Concertmaster and Artistic consultant of the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, and Violin faculty of Charlotte School of the Arts while in Charlotte, NC. Other engagements have included teaching at Furman University and South Carolina Governor‚s school of the Arts.
Mr. Yu was appointed assistant professor of violin at School of Music, Lee University in Cleveland, TN in 2004. Mr. Yu moved to Cleveland and joined the performance faculty teaching violin and chamber music. As founder and director of Lee Chamber Strings, Mr. Yu has quickly taken the young string players to the performances of State conferences and regional tours. In 2006, Mr. Yu was appointed as artistic director of A.P.E.I. International Summer Music and Arts Festival in China which engages world prominent performers and artists. As artistic director, Mr. Yu has tour lectured in 7 Provinces of 15 music schools, universities, and conservatories in China. In 2007, Mr. Yu was appointed as senior adviser and liaison for the Xi‚An PeiHua International Center for Arts and Culture Education Exchange in Xi‚An, China. The Center will open in to scholars, artists, musicians, faculty, and students worldwide in 2009.
