Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to a GSO concert?

Since there is no dress code for GSO concerts, we encourage our patrons to wear whatever makes them comfortable. Typically, concert attire ranges from business casual to business attire. Although you won't see many people in jeans, dress however you are comfortable!

How can I learn more about the music?

There are many ways to learn more about the music you'll hear at a GSO concert. Paul Hyde of The Greenville News conducts free Pre-Concert Talks one hour prior to our Masterworks Series concerts in The Founder's Room above Larkin's on the River (reservations not necessary).

Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel joins members of the Guild of the Greenville Symphony the Friday before each Masterworks concert in a private home for a Concert Preview of that weekend's performance. Click here to learn more about becoming a member of The Guild.

We publish our concert program notes before each Masterworks and Chamber Orchestra concert on the GSO website. Click here to link to the upcoming concert's program notes.

When Should I Applaud?

Applause at GSO performances is meant both as a greeting and to show appreciation for the artists. Just before the concert begins, after all the musicians are seated, the concertmaster takes the stage. Traditionally, patrons applaud to greet the concertmaster and again a few moments later to greet the conductor and soloists.

Many musical works have multiple movements or sections. A short pause often follows each movement. It is customary to refrain from applauding during these pauses. After the final movement of a work, however, applaud to your heart's content. If in doubt, applaud with everyone else!

What is your electronic device policy?

Cameras, audio recorders, and video recorders are not permitted at concerts, as they may interfere with the musicians' performance. Please turn off all beepers, cell phones, and watch alarms before entering the hall.

Is there a child policy?

The GSO welcomes children who are five and older at concerts. Tickets are required for children, regardless of age. The GSO performs free "Lollipops" concerts in the community for children of all ages. Contact the Education Coordinator at (864) 232-0344, x19 or braxton@greenvillesymphony.org for more information about Lollipops or other opportunities for children.

Are special services available?

Seating and special assistance are available in all theaters for people with disabilities. Please notify the box office when ordering tickets if you will need special assistance.

What if I have tickets but cannot attend the performance?

If you cannot attend a GSO Masterworks or Chamber Orchestra performance, you may return your tickets to The Peace Center Box Office before the show begins in exchange for tickets to a future GSO performance (based on availability). The box office charges a small fee to non-subscribers for this service. You may also donate your unused tickets prior to the concert and will receive a tax letter.

If you are unable to attend a Spotlight Series concert, you may exchange your tickets at the Centre Stage Box Office prior to the performance for tickets to a future Spotlight Series concert.

How long are concerts?

Masterworks, Chamber Orchestra, and "Holiday at Peace" concerts are usually around two hours including intermission. Spotlight Series concerts are approximately one hour, without intermission.
